MONDAY DECEMBER 21st
There are still 17 girls basketball teams that are undefeated in Indiana. Those
teams include Westfield, Hobart, Barr-Reeve, Ben Davis, Gibson Southern, Gavit,
Kokomo, Mooresville, Winchester, Floyd Central, Merrillville, Randolph Southern,
Vincennes Rivet, Norwell, Warsaw, Jasper, & South Bend Clay.
Of these teams, a few are guarenteed not to continue undefeated throughout the
reguar season. For instance, Merrillville will host Hobart on January 19th.
Likewise, Hobart will host Gavit to conclude the season on the 4th of Febuary.
Also Barr-Reeve and Vincennes Rivet will be hooking up at the Patriots home court
on the 28th of January.
You can catch most of these teams in tournaments over the holidays. With only a
little over a month left in the season, I would catch one of these teams before it
is too late!
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 22nd
It's early in the season, but Northwest Indiana girls basketball already has only
a few undefeated teams left. Nine, in fact. Those teams include Merrillville and
Portage (both 3-0) from the Duneland, Gavit (4-0) from The Great Lakes, no
teams from the Greater South Shore, Hobart (5-0) and Munster (3-0) from the
Northwest Crossroads, West Side and Roosevelt (both 2-0) from the
Northwestern, Boone Grove (4-0) from the PCC, and 3-0 Bowman Academy who is
an independent.
On the other side, there are not many winless teams either. Again, there are
only nine including Morton, Hammond High and Clark from the Great Lakes, Edison
and Marquette from the Greater South Shore, no teams from the Northwest
Crossroads, Northwest Crossroads, or the independents, and South Central,
Morgan Township, Washington Township and LaCrosse from the PCC.
It's too early to make any real predictions based on these early numbers since
early season schedules often contain much larger or much smaller conference
school that make getting a win much harder or easier respectively. My point is
that fans of those undefeated teams should not make their state championship
plans just yet and fans of those winless teams should not hang it up just yet.
There are a lot of games and there is a lot of time between now and a potential
trip to Fort Wayne.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11th
Northwest Indiana has had it's share of outstanding softball pitchers. One of
them, Amanda Wendlinger, is just 5 years removed from becoming the second
player in state championship history to pitch a perfect game for Hanover Central
en route to a 2A state championship. Wendlinger, who played collegiatly at the
University of Indianapolis, will be taking her vast softball knowledge to North
Newton High School as the Spartans new head coach.
SEPTEMBER 7th
Believe it or not, as of Labor Day the high school volleyball regular season is
about half way over, with sectionals less than a month away. At mid season some
stars are beginning to rise in Indiana. Some of the names are familiar and playing
for highly ranked teams, others are individual stars on teams that don't get the
same accolades.
Here are some of the leaders through the first half:
Kills
1. Julie Roeder (SR-OH) Tecumseh 5.6 kills per game, 46.8% kill %
2. Maggie Harbison (SR-OH/MH) Carmel 4.7 kills per game, 48.3% kill %
3. Sofia Cucuz (JR-OH/MH) Crown Point 4.4 kills per game, 46.4% kill %
4. Taylor Unroe (SR-OH) Muncie Burris 3.9 kills per game, 52.8% kill %
5. Kreigha Henney (SR-MH) Columbus East 3.5 kills per game, 56.8% kill %
Muncie Burris has two other players in the top 20 in kills in Junior Chelsie Toth
and Taylor Morey. Crown Point also features a second player, Junior Gabrielle
Raspopovich and Columbus East also feature Alicia Gosney. Also worth noting is the
Knox 1-2 punch of Juniors Caity Farus and Janyl Zachary who are number 7 and 8
respectively in kills per game.
As the mid season look back continues, we will look at the top 4 in digs in Indiana.
The top five include Senior Daniell Hartmann of Churubusco (7.0 digs per game),
Washington Township Junior Sarah Lawson (6.8 digs per game), Senior Emily Reber
from Carmel (6.3), Columbus East Senior Katlyn Hudson (6.1) and from Evansville
Central, Jumior Sydney Franklin (5.3).
Worth noting is that kill leader Julie Roeder from Tecumseh is also in the top 20
in digs (#16).
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2nd
Dan Burkman replaces Dana Scott as the Head Basketball Coach of the girls team
at Indian Creek. Burkman was a former assistant at Southport. This leaves only
8 open head coaching positions on the girls side in the state. Those open positions
include Bethesda Christian, Bloomfield, FW Carroll, Center Grove, Fall Creek
Academy, Milan, North Miami, and Pike.
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 1st
If there was ever any doubt to the quality of high school volleyball in Indiana, it
should be erased after the release of the national volleyball rankings on
MaxPreps.com. In the top 25 are two Indiana teams including perennial 2A power
Muncie Burris at #10 and Brebuef at #15.
MONDAY AUGUST 17th
The IHSAA has modernized the state softball tournament starting in the
2009-2010 year. Previously, four team have gone to the state finals and
competed in a semi-final on Friday before that championship games on Saturday.
The new format will begin the sectionals at the same point in the season as in
previous years with a 1 game regional on the following Tuesday, a four game
semi-state on the next Saturday and the state championship game the next
Saturday. This is probably a good move for Indiana Softball because of delays
over the past several years in getting all of the semi-final and final games in due
to rain in June.
THURSDAY AUGUST 13th
This may be old news by now, but for those who have not heard the IHSAA girls
basketball state finals will be held in Fort Wayne for the 2009-2010 season. This
will mark the first time since the girls basketball tournament started that the
finals have been held outside of Indianapolis. The championships, which are slated
for March 6th,could not be held at Lucas Oil Stadium because of a trade show,
Conseco Fieldhouse because of the Big Ten Tournament, or at Hinkle Fieldhouse
because of a possible Horizon League Tournament conflict. Instead, the class
A-AAAA titles will be held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, in the
Northeast corner of the state. Fort Wayne won over bids from ball State and
Indiana to hold the finals. Regardless, it should be interesting to see what
attendance will be like, especially if there are participating teams from south of
Indianapolis.
